And their main purpose is to introduce these animals to the public. It is also a method of recognizing the best of the best, although some really superior goats are not shown due to owner preference. Claiming that horns regulate a goat's body or brain temperature is like claiming that your ribcage regulates the temperature of your organs.
Horns are used to scratch with but are also used to fight with. This can lead to injury such as broken bones and lacerations. A goat's horns can tear a female goat's udder damaging it permanently, but this is uncommon in Boers. Some goats use their horns against people, but Boer goats are known for being docile and rarely, if ever, use their horns against people. Exceptions to this may be if a female goat is protecting her kid(s), or if a buck is "in rut" (getting ready to breed), but even then this is unlikely.
