By the looks of it, that crocodile did not have the best grip on the buffalo's throat area. It is all a matter of leverage; the jaws of a crocodile are most powerful in the rear where the molariform teeth reside. Because of this, the crocodile had little leverage. This is also attributed to the fact that the teeth of crocodiles are designed for gripping, which means that the buffalo would have gotten away with only a few pierce wounds.

speaking of which, i remember on a documentary somewhere that a crocodile could not tear open a deer's hide. Crocodiles are more than capable of tearing open prey animals. Their jaws and teeth aren't designed for it (their teeth are conical), but they can tear open prey animals by spinning and/or by shaking their head violently. I saw one documentary where a zebra's guts were actually spilling out of its belly after a crocodile attack. And then I saw another documentary (I believe it was called "Crocodile King" and it was on Nat Geo Wild) where a crocodile ripped a wallaby and a dingo to bits.

also, there is a youtube video of a BBC documentary where a crocodile grabbed a buffalo by the throat but was unable to subdue it and was pulled onto land. That is because crocodiles do not kill by biting the throat...
