Holy crap. I knew army ant major bites could draw blood, but this is quite a bit for a 2 cm insect.

Certainly wouldn't be something I would want on my finger. These bites actually do damage; they're not just for hanging on.

That's Eciton Hamatum, the OP picture was Eciton Burchelli. I'm told that the latter has stronger bites and more painful stings, but I wouldn't do well to get bitten by the major caste of either. They're called army ants, and the soldiers are ferocious. How fitting.
