What do you guys think about culling elephants using lethal methods?
I don't believe that deliberate killing of such intelligent creatures with such strong social bonds could be morally pure. As one animal rights group put it, how much more do elephants have to be like us for killing them to be considered murder?
Some argue that this is a win-win situation in which both species get food. First off, the elephants are still losing out in comparison (they get killed, derp) and second, these people don't appear to be acknowledging the elephant as a conscious, aware, and intelligent beings. It's the same way in which the US regarded African Americans and Native Americans. They aren't truly being thought of as "alive".
Food seems like no excuse to be destroying life in such an apathetic manner. Should we kill humans off when our planet runs low on natural resources? That'd be genocide. No, I'm not suggesting that we cull humans (like some would accuse me of), but asking to raise the bar for elephants. As I always like to say, bringing one thing down isn't bringing another up; it's just bringing one thing down.
Killing elephants off because there isn't enough food for all the animals appears counter-productive. Ok, some animals are going to die, so you kill them all off before that? The only thing this might possibly accomplish is a quicker death. Otherwise, it solves no problems. Either way, they still die. Seems pointless.
Thought humans would be trying to save elephants, but now, a fair few want to kill them off. Aren't they low enough in number already? "Ecological disruption"? Well we didn't have any of that shit when there were a couple million elephants in Africa eh? Either that's utter bullshit or humans have screwed everything up so much that elephants are actually large in number compared to other species.
It appears as if some defenders of culling say that leaving elephants as they are would result in a "Holocaust" for other animals. Yeah, because elephants are lining rhinos and lions and cheetahs and zebras and shooting then and gassing them to death, right? Not so sure that's what's to THOSE animals... :/
