Note: I am not speaking about decent, tolerant religious people. Wyvax, Tyrannosaurus, and Ultimategrid for example.
So, I was questioning my Christian friend about heaven and hell, and the criteria he believed were required to get to both. My friend said that he believed the only thing you needed to do to get into heaven was to believe in Jesus as your savior. Anyone who did not do so was condemned to hell. Now I found this a bit odd, so I asked him if a Christian rapist and murderer who believed in Jesus as his savior would still go to heaven. My friend nodded to this. It was then that I asked if a good person who did not believe in Jesus as his savior would go to hell, while a Christian murderer and rapist would go to heaven. He confirmed this. So I asked him if he thought I would go to hell. After a bit of stammering, he said, uh, yeah. And here's the problem. Why would people EVER teach others that all you need to do to get into some wonderful afterlife is to believe in a man dying for your sins, regardless of how moral you are as a person? Yet, anyone who doesn't believe is damned, no matter how good they are or ever will be. It's not that my friend is a douchebag. No, he's a good person. I would think his religion reflects the opposite. This sort of Christianity is like a dictatorship, a clique. You believe what I believe. Nothing else matters. You don't and you get punished. Certainly seems to provoke free thought, eh? Well, I'm thinking that although this is rather angering, my friend isn't truly at fault. He was brought up this way and this is what his parents told him. It rather saddens me, seeing that he never had a choice of his own to make about his beliefs. So, here's this thing: Crap like this needs to be wiped out. Stopped. How can we let that chain of bovine scat keep passing on and on? I'm fine with religion so long as it's not harmful, but these beliefs are completely misguided. If people want to be Christians, that's fine. What I am NOT fine with is the idea that anybody who thinks differently than yourself will be eternally punished. Bias, prejudice, most hate and condemn it. Yet there's quite a few people out there that practice it themselves in god's name. Truly, truly, how can we ever get anything across if they continue to brainwash their children into this f*cked up rewards system?

I think the best quote to match this situation is as follows: "Religion is like your dick, you can love it and be proud of it, but don't wave it around in public, and DON'T try to shove it down kid's throats."

Ah, I saw that quote before. It was on Youtube.
Someone posted this in reply to one of those things:
An Atheist is like a Penis It's fine with us if you don't believe in God It's fine with us if you are proud of it But please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around and please don't try to shove it down my children's throat.
Somehow it doesn't seem very effective.
And saying atheists are penises, I must say, is something of an insult.

If others don't want to believe it, I don't care. And I seriously hope that the whole "burn in Hell if you don't believe in me" is false.

Hope my friend changes his views about the whole thing sometime. If I were a Christian, I'd be praying for him.

I personally see religion as a double edged sword.
With it we have religious wackos that would kill people for their faith.
Without it we would have more petty crimes as they wouldn't be concerned about some "divine punishment".
Either way we get cut.

People will commit crimes - and do good - regardless of their religion.

Depending on the religion it can greatly reduce it.
The Mesopotamians had many criminals because of their bleak belief that they would go to a hellish afterlife whether they were moral people or not so they had to be controlled through law alone.
I imagine that the world would be a lot more dangerous without Christianity and other religions that believe in a "heavenly punishment".

Most atheists are not criminals, and yet most are also moral people. My guess is that if everyone were an atheist, hardly a difference would be made in morality. There are "good" people and there are "bad" people.

And most Christians aren't criminals.
I am an atheist myself and I feel that crime would go up significantly if every human on earth was an atheist.

Most Christians aren't criminals. That's why I said there would hardly be a difference, not everyone would be more moral. If the crime would seriously go up that much, people's consciences would be corrupt as hell. I doubt many need the threat of hell to keep them from engaging in hideous acts of cruelty. In fact, people sometimes use their religion to justify this.

There was a question on Yahoo answers that went something like, "Why does society look down on atheists?". And quite a few of the responses revolved around the idea that atheists weren't looked down upon, and that atheists in general were terrible, spiteful people. What hypocritical @$$hores.

Dont let this get to offensive guys. Religion or not crime is going to happen and I doubt the crime rate would increase. I cant think of many buddhist crminals and they do not believe in a hellish afterlife.

No but they believe in a "heavenly reward".
If your "evil" your next life will be shitty as hell.
If your "good" your next life will be pleasant.
