Elephants, Rhinos, and hippos sometimes run from lions. Why they do so is beyond me. There's absolutely nothing the predator can do to hurt them.

At night, elephants know they are outclassed in vision, although they may bully the lions around a bit just to say "don't mess with me". Mother elephants will probably protect their calves regardless of predators, and large, healthy bulls in the peak of health will probably not give a d@mn unless attacked. In the daytime the lions are far more likely to be the ones running.

Guess i would say bears, especially American black bears which will run and tree from housecats...they don't seem to have any good reason to fear them either. leopards can also appear as "cowardly" too sometimes.. and the gorillas (even silverbacks) instinctive fear of snakes is probably due to the fact that some species are highly venomous and can kill a full sized gorilla with one bite.

I believe reptiles and primates actually once competed with each other and that explains how so many of us (and apparently, our cousins in the evolutionary line) have an irrational fear of snakes. Hmm, wonder if some of them have an irrational fear of us? Well when we're 70 times larger I'm not exactly sure you can name it as such.

Yeah it's unfortunate that ape haters (not referring to you) often use it as an excuse to say gorillas are poor fighters and weak animals. If anything, the gorilla is the direct opposite of a cowardly animal. Hell, it'll charge through machine gunfire to protect his family.

often use it as an excuse to say gorillas are poor fighters and weak animals. Well that's a half-@$$ed argument coming from those people. Even if gorillas were somehow scared of everything, it does not denote them being weak in combat.

I agree with Leopjag regarding bears. Black bears are actually afraid WE will attack them. Not vice versa.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T3IaK7okOE The narrator, David Attenborough says tigers aren't used to animals that bite back. But still not quite AS cowardly as the lion I have to admit.

^Okay just because a pair of lions didn't engage a trio of youngsters, doesn't mean they represent the entire species. The lion rivals the bear as one of the most cowardly animals on earth. The lion has been observed running from cheetahs, leopards, tiny snakes, lizards, cameras, humans, cows, and antelopes. Bears from tiny dogs, cougars, wolves, eagles, and house cats. Hard to top that.

Elephants are scared of mice and humans have been observed being petrified by the sight of insects thousands of times smaller than themselves. looks like the lions and bears have been topped by us and elephants.

Herd animals are in general very cowardly I am afraid.
I've seen a herd of several hundred buffalo stampede in fear from a dozen lions.
They don't realize that as long as they stand ground there is nothing the predator can do.
