If a nile crocodile struggles with a cape buffalo, the salty has slim chance of taking down the much larger, more muscular gaur.

I don't think any individual modern carnivore can take down a bull gaur in a face to face fight.
Only rhinos, hippos, and elephants are outright dominant over a bull gaur.

And I think animals like Arctotherium are as well. Anyway, I actually can't see how the gaur can defend itself against a crocodile even on land. It's horns are too high and they have rather small hooves. I see the croc being able to bite at the gaur's legs and then killing it. Or otherwise biting it's head and waiting for it to bleed. What on earth makes the crocodile some kind of magical animal incapable of being injured? When a nearly 1 ton bovine is going to be standing on its skull stomping down, there is no doubt that the croc is going to be injured. yes, the gaur isnt the type of bovine that gores with its horns but that wont make a difference here. The crocodile will not be able to just break the gaurs legs like that. The croc attempting to get a hold of a struggling gaurs legs will be kicked around and stompted to death. Only the biggest crocs in existence can hope to wrestle an average gaur outside of deep water and even those will almost always fail. I think this video best demonstrates what will happen to a crocodile if it attempts to attack a bovine outside of deep water: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KeqSU6rB9I

I agree with fish fan. Seeing that the bovine in the video was a cape buffalo, I'd hate to think what a much heavier, more muscular Gaur could do to the crocodile. Cr1TiKaL: What are you talking about man? The crocodile, being so low to the ground, is the animal that won't be able to defend itself nearly as well as a bovine could. The gaur would simply stomp, kick, and throw the reptile around.

I do not know of many of the strengths and weaknesses of gaurs. Thus I cannot say who will win. Surely, something as big as a large gaur would be immensely risky for even a salty to take down, but you will be surprised at how big salties can really get. Lolong rounded 23 feet in length and weighed well over a ton

A crocodile can win in deep water, definitely a large crocodile specimen. Of course in such cases the gaur would be at a great disadvantage. In a realistic scenario though, most of the time a healthy bull gaur would be able to escape to shallow water or land before it is dragged down or torn apart. On land a bull gaur is thrashing even the largest saltwater croc, simple as that.

Hell even zebras can be hard to take down for crocodiles.

I am starting to think this is a bit of a stalemate...
