American LionThe American lion is an extinct animal which originated in North America and went on to colonize part of South America as part of the Great American Interchange. The head-body length of the American lion is estimated to have been 1.6β2.5 m (5 ft 3 inβ8 ft 2 in) and it would have stood 1.2 metres (4 ft) at the shoulder. Thus it was smaller than its contemporary competitor for prey, the giant short-faced bear, which was the largest carnivoran of North America at the time. The American lion was not as heavily built as the saber-toothed cat Smilodon populator, which may have weighed up to 360β470 kilograms (790β1,000 lb). Sorkin (2008) estimated it to weigh roughly 420 kilograms (930 lb), but new estimations show a top weight of 351 kg (774lbs.) for the largest specimen and an average weight for males of 255.65 kg (563lbs.). Smilodon PopulatorThe species of Smilodon were among the largest felids ever to live; the heaviest specimens of the massively built carnivore S. populator may have exceeded 500 kg (1,100 lb). A fully-grown Smilodon weighed approximately 55 to 470 kg (120 to 1,000 lb), depending on species. It had a short tail, powerful legs, muscular neck and long canines. Smilodon was more robustly built than any modern cat, comparable to a bear. The lumbar region of the back was proportionally short, and the lower limbs were shortened relative to the upper limbs in comparison with modern pantherine cats, suggesting that Smilodon was not built for speed. This match is at parity assuming the two cats are around the same weights.

I favor the Smildon Populator here because it had a better built body and saber-teeth.

the reason I think smilodon would lose would be the inability to use its sabers or other teeth in combat

Sabertooth was stockier built and had stronger arms.

Smilodon should win. It's got advantages in strength and build, enough for it to kill the lion more often than not.

More than likely, the American Lion would have avoided conflict with the Smilodon, and to a lesser extent, vice versa. Both would have recognised the other as potentially dangerous. The American Lion would have been faster & more agile: thus it would have been more likely to get out of the way to avoid conflict. One would think that a bite from Smilodon would have been pretty disabling if it was able to get one in, but the more agile cat would have made a difficult target, and doubtless had very sharp claws which, at close quarters, could have inflicted some fairly serious slashing injuries. I don't think either would have made a good 'mouser' around the cave!
