Are these Tsavo lions? quite impressive how much bigger/more impressive the male looks compared to the female in spite of his total lack of a mane!
very much like the difference in size/appearance between male leopards and leopardesses.

Nice find. It is a great example of the size difference but I dont think the difference is quite like a leopard and a leopardess because an impressive lioness is every bit as powerful looking as a male. Leopardnesses never seem to reach a similar build to there male counterparts.

^True. sometime ago Chui PMed me a couple of examples impressive leopardesses - one Persian and another from India...about as impressive as a leopardess can get..and still no where near as impressive in build as some of the lionesses that Britt has posted pictures of. unfortunately i don't remember if i saved them or not...if only taipan would temporarily lift my ban so i can get back into my PM inbox!

Are you sure the bigger one was a male? Lionesses have been observed trying to mate with others of their gender as disgusting as it sounds.

other than being larger the lion doesn't look much more impressively built than the lioness if you ask me.
Lions are very lanky and have shallow, thin, streamlined builds for running down animals in the open field.
